About us

A family farm built for commercial growth

Makolele Country Farm (Pty) Ltd was established in June 2020 and is owned by the Mabasa family. The farm provides commercial farming services, specialising in livestock and fresh organic produce for local markets. Fresh organic produce supports a healthier lifestyle.

We are a commercial mixed farming operation that integrates butternut production, Boran cattle, Boer goats and a new 160,000-bird broiler enterprise. From our base in Beja, on the outskirts of Louis Trichardt, we reach Gauteng markets (Pretoria and Johannesburg), the Limpopo school feeding programme, the Beja Abattoirs / Karan Beef supply chain, and communities and businesses across Vhembe.

We are also acquiring more land for grazing, cash crops, tropical fruit (avocado) and nut trees (macadamia). In the long term we plan to expand into poultry hatchery and broiler production for local and global markets.

To establish a commercially sustainable, compliant and diversified mixed farming enterprise that supplies high-quality seasonal crops, including butternuts, chevon (goat meat), beef and poultry, to South Africa's formal and informal markets, while creating employment, improving soil health and managing risk through integration.

We want our livestock, chicken and fresh produce to be easily accessible to everyone in the country, and to contribute directly to South Africa's GDP through our yields and long-term, sustainable jobs.

  • Produce safe, traceable and compliant agricultural products
  • Optimise gross margin per hectare, per head and per bird
  • Integrate livestock and crop enterprises to reduce input costs and risk
  • Build long-term relationships with retailers, abattoirs, butcheries, feedlots and fresh produce markets
  • Maintain financial buffers, insurance and hedging to withstand market and climate shocks

We have 8 permanent farm workers, one farm manager and seven farm hands, all stationed on the farm.

Our Farm Manager, Mr Themba Monepya, oversees all farming activities and has been with Makolele since its inception. He is well known among our neighbouring farmers.

We also employ 15 to 25 seasonal workers each year for land preparation, irrigation installation, drip laying, weeding and harvesting.

Essential infrastructure & resources

A well-developed, water-secure farm

The farm covers 34 hectares of arable and grazing land. A further 33 hectares from two neighbouring farms is being acquired, and a survey and subdivision application has been submitted to the Department of Agriculture. We are also negotiating for another 200 hectares. If that succeeds, the farm will grow to 267 hectares.

About 3 hectares make up the homestead: the farmhouse, staff quarters, cattle kraal, goat shelter, dosing facility, horse stable, shed, barn, chicken run, a 12m × 3m steel container, enclosed garage and workshop.
